Organizational Problem-Solving Case Study #2

Case Study #2: Paralyzed Federal Agency

Problem: A visible federal agency office was paralyzed by internal strife. Projects were launched and then abandoned because of the organization's inability to achieve consensus in a "kumbaya" culture that seemed to require complete consensus prior to proceeding. The organization's confidence in its ability to get anything done correctly or successfully was virtually nil.

Strategic Futures® Solution: We gathered information from management, employees and customers using focus groups and retreats. We analyzed work plans and supervised a planning process that focused on creating small plans that fueled incremental success and an expanding confidence. A key part of the consultants' role was to follow-up at key intervals to supply motivation and stimulation to keep the organization on target. At the completion of the engagement, the organization's culture was shifting to a success mode — becoming more positive, productive, and impactful. This office is now off the bench and on the playing field — a full-fledged part of the agency leadership team.
